Markella’s Scoliosis Story
What started out as what we thought would be a routine visit to an orthopedist turned into a life changing event when I asked the doctor to check our daughter’s spine for scoliosis. At first, he thought everything looked good, but then the look on his face changed and he said he wanted to do an x-ray. A few minutes later he returned and explained that our daughter’s spine was at 45 degrees and had advanced juvenile scoliosis. He recommended we look into Schroth therapy and referred us to an orthopedic surgeon. Upon hearing this, we went into overdrive and began making calls and scheduling appointments for evaluations. We had her evaluated by a physical therapist who practices the Schroth method, had a consultation with a neurosurgeon recommended by her neurologist and saw an orthopedic surgeon. They all had differing opinions, which led us to Dr. Girardi.
Our experience upon meeting Dr. Girardi was better than we ever imagined. The entire process from scheduling appointments, completing paperwork, and preparing for surgery was so smooth. The office staff was extremely accommodating, supportive and helpful. We were anxious leading up to the surgery, given our daughter’s young age and her other medical diagnosis of Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, but Dr. Girardi was patient, comforting and reassuring every step of the way. He took the time to explain the procedure and why his recommendation was the best choice for our daughter. Our daughter’s recovery has been amazing. Immediately following surgery, we thought our daughter had a long road ahead of her, but she improved faster than we expected. She was able to begin gait training with her physical therapist a couple weeks following surgery and has come so far. You would never know that beneath her skin lies two titanium rods and 13 screws. Dr. Girardi changed our daughter’s life and her future! The level of care Dr. Girardi provided went above and beyond and we are forever grateful to him.
